Milo Fultz & Merlin Showalter
Having worked together as a rhythm section for five years, Merlin Showalter and Milo Fultz share a well-honed musical chemistry and a love of a diverse styles of music. Since they have started making "infectious grooves you can't sit still to" (David Friedlander, engineer for Prince/Pink Martini), they have supported a myriad of different artists, including ukulele artists Craig Chee and Sarah Maisel, Youtube stars Peter and Evynne Hollens, comedian Bob Newhart, and others (Siri Vik, Beth Wood, Emerald City Jazz Kings). Though their roots are in composed music, performing regularly with symphonies, operas, ballets, and musicals, they have years of experience in improvisational music, winning awards at the Reno Jazz Festival, as well as a Downbeat Student Award in 2013 for their work with jazz-fusion group YamaYama. Aside from performing, they both regularly serve as educators and clinicians for Oregon-area schools.
In 2016, Merlin and Milo are looking forward to upcoming workshops and performances with Craig Chee and Sarah Maisel at various ukulele festivals around the Pacific Northwest.
Milo Fultz is a bassist who enjoys playing music of every style. His performing experience ranges widely, from holding the Principal Bass position with the Boise Philharmonic (2013-2015) and Section Bass with Oregon Ballet Theater, to award-winning performances, such as Ty Curtis Band (2nd Place in 2009 International Blues Competition), YamaYama (Best Blues/Pop/Rock Group in 2013 Downbeat Student Music Awards), and as a soloist (Featured Performer in 2014 Oregon Bach Festival Composers Symposium), As a member of the ukulele community, he has performed with Craig Chee, Sarah Maisel, Jim D’Ville, and others, performed on the 2014 Uke Cruise, as well as assisted workshops with Craig Chee and Sarah Maisel. He currently holds the Bass Instructor position at New Hope Christian College and maintains a private studio teaching bass and tutoring general music. He attended University of Oregon where he graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelors in Music Performance in 2014. Milo is endorsed by Ohana Ukuleles.
Merlin Showalter’s experience spans the musical gamut from rock to jazz, country to hip-hop, funk to salsa, breakbeat and beyond. A graduate from the University of Oregon School of Music with a Bachelor’s Degree in Percussion Performance, he is classically trained in addition to having performed with numerous bands throughout the Pacific-Northwest. Merlin has performed on cruise ships around the Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas, and has performed in dozens of musical theatre and ballet productions. He has been a featured soloist with the Oregon Jazz Ensemble, Oregon Percussion Ensemble, the Emerald City Jazz Kings, and more. He has performed and/or recorded with a variety of notable artists such as jazz piano heavyweight Danilo Perez, Motown girl-group The Crystals, comedian Rich Little, Doo-Wop Hall-of-Famers The Diamonds, and Zimbabwean musician Thomas Mapfumo. In addition to performing around the West Coast, Merlin is also an active studio session musician and frequent participant in the Oregon Festival of American Music. He teaches drums at his private studio and currently holds the Percussion Instructor position at New Hope Christian College.
